PLANER SAFETY

RULES OF THE PLANER:

1. Be sure to have your instructor's permission before operating the machine. This includes the expectation that you have:

  • Taken and passed the safety test.

  • Demonstrated the proper use of this power tool to your instructor.

  • Demonstrated the ability to work safely while in the wood shop.

2. Do not use when overly tired, distracted or when on medications that cause sleepiness.

3. Wear appropriate shoes and clothing.

  • Always wear eye protection.

  • Clothing should not be loose, baggy or torn.

  • Remove ALL jewelry, tie back long hair and roll up long sleeves

  • Open-toes shoes and Crocs should NOT be worn.

  • Remove all headphones and AirPods when operating machinery.

Before Starting the Planer:

  1. Make all adjustments, including those for correct thickness, while the machine is at a complete stop.

  • Depth of cut is related to width and hardness of the wood.

      • Typically, this is 1/32 or 1/16 of an inch.

  • NEVER plane more than a 1/8" of wood at a time.

  • NEVER plane boards of differing thicknesses at the same time.

  1. Material should be at least 12" long. If you are not sure, contact your teacher.

  2. Inspect the wood before machining it. The wood must be dry and free of metal (staples and nails), loose nails and serious defects.

  • Do not plane plywood, MDF or painted wood.

  1. Make sure the dust collector is on before you start the machine.

While in Operation:

  1. Like all machines, you must give the planer your undivided attention during use. Do not use when overly tired, distracted or when on medications that cause sleepiness.

  • Do not look up or engage in conversation while working.

  1. Do not start the plane if the wood is in contact with the planer knives.

  2. Plane with the grain. NEVER attempt to plane across the grain.

  3. Stand to one side of the work being fed and never reach into the cutterhead while the machine is running.

  4. If the board comes to a stop while cutting, turn off the machine and then raise the cutterhead or lower the table to remove the wood.

  5. Realize there is no shortcut in woodworking. When beginning your work on the planer, prepare yourself for a slower work pace that is more deliberate and safety conscious. Accept the fact that everything will take longer than you think.

  6. This is a 1 person machine. Everyone else should be outside of the safety zone.

Maintenance:

  1. If the machine has a bag, make sure to empty frequently to prevent sending dust into the air.

  2. Unplug the machine and raise the cutterhead (or lower the table) to vacuum out the inside area of the planer when it is filled with sawdust.
