TOOL ID, EQUIPMENT AND SAFETY

General Shop Safety Rules

GENERAL BEHAVIORS:

  1. Horseplay is not permitted. Also, avoid loud noises, running and pushing while in the shop.

  2. Never throw a tool to another person.

  3. Carry cutting tools with the sharp edge down.

  4. Use the right tool for the job.

  5. Do not lay tools sticking out over the edge of the workbench.

  6. Stay alert, think about what you are doing and think SAFETY FIRST.

  • If you are not sure how to use a tool or piece of equipment, ask your instructor.

  1. Keep work areas and floors clear of scraps, liquid spills and hazardous materials.

  2. Clean up your area and help put all tools and supplies away at the end of the period.

  3. Keep vises closed with the handles in the vertical position unless being used.

  4. Keep locker doors closed unless being used.

  5. Do not visit with, disturb, bother or push anyone who is working with tools or at/on a machine.

  6. Observe and pay attention to colored safety codes and warning labels while working in the lab.

  • Stay outside the safety zone while other students are operating machines.

  1. Report all injuries, accidents or fires to your teacher immediately.

  2. Avoid cutting corners and creating unsafe work conditions.

  • Do not hurry or rush.

  • Do not continue working once your teacher has called time at the end of class.

  1. When working in the shop, talk in a low tone of voice. Loud boisterous talk and noise makes others jittery and uncomfortable. This may lead to accidents.

  2. Do not leave the shop without the instructor's knowledge and permission.

  3. Remind visitors to wear safety glasses while visiting in the shop.


MACHINES and POWER TOOLS:

  1. Never use a machine or power tool without your teacher's permission.

  • Machines may only be used after passing the written safety test and with proper instruction.

  • Do not use machinery when the teacher is not in the room.

  1. Think about what you are doing and think SAFETY FIRST.

  • Never attempt to work with tools or equipment if you are tired, sick, distracted or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

  1. Notify your teacher immediately if there are any defective machines or tools.

  • This includes bits and blades that may break while in use.

  1. Keep all safety guards in proper position while the machine is in operation.

  2. Keep hands and fingers away from moving parts on all machines.

  3. Never leave a machine until it has come to a COMPLETE stop.

  4. Stay outside the safety zone while another student is operating the machine.


CLOTHING and PPE:

  1. Wear appropriate shoes and clothing for all lab situations.

  • Clothing should not be loose, baggy or torn.

  • Clothing should not be highly flammable.

  • Open-toes shoes, high heels and Crocs should NOT be worn.

  • Remove all headphones and Airpods when operating machinery.

  • Remove ALL jewelry, tie back long hair and roll up long sleeves when working around equipment.

  1. Approved safety glasses (z 87.1 stamp) must be worn AT ALL TIMES when in the shop.

  2. Ask for ear protection if needed.

  3. Wear other specific PPE as needed by the specific job; i.e. gloves for stains, face shield for larger lathes.
