Using the drill press

RULES OF THE DRILL PRESS:

1. Be sure to have your instructor's permission before operating the machine. This includes the expectation that you have:

  • Taken and passed the safety test.

  • Demonstrated the proper use of this power tool to your instructor.

2. Do not use when overly tired, distracted or when on medications that cause sleepiness.

3. Wear appropriate shoes and clothing.

  • Always wear eye protection.

  • Clothing should not be loose, baggy or torn.

  • Remove ALL jewelry, tie back long hair and roll up long sleeves

  • Open-toes shoes and Crocs should NOT be worn.

  • Remove all headphones and Airpods when operating machinery.

4. Check the table lock before you operate the drill press and make sure it is tight.

5. ALWAYS secure all stock (projects) in a vise or with a clamp BEFORE you start drilling.

6. Check to make sure that the drill bit is secure in the chuck.

7. Make sure the chuck key is removed from the chuck before you turn on the machine.

8. Make all adjustments while the machine is at a complete stop.

9. Withdraw the bit frequently to prevent your wood from burning.

10. Use slower speeds when drilling larger holes.

11. Use the depth stop for drilling partially through the material.

12. Never attempt to stop a revolving piece of work by hand.

13. Keep the drill press clear of scraps and excess parts while working.

14. Make sure long hair is tied back. Watches and jewelry should be removed.

15. This is a 1 person machine. Everyone else should be outside of the safety zone.
