ROUTER 101
GENERAL SAFETY AND USE
Be sure to have your instructor's permission before operating the machine. This includes the expectation that you have:
Taken and passed the safety test.
Demonstrated the proper use of this power tool to your instructor.
Demonstrated the ability to work safely while in the wood shop.
Do not use when overly tired, distracted or when on medications that cause sleepiness.
Wear appropriate shoes and clothing.
Always wear eye protection.
Clothing should not be loose, baggy or torn.
Remove ALL jewelry, tie back long hair and roll up long sleeves
Open-toes shoes and Crocs should NOT be worn.
Remove all headphones and AirPods when operating machinery.
Before and During Use:
When possible, mount the cutter so that most of the cutting will be performed on the lower part of the edge. Any unused part of the cutter should be below the table.
An approved lock washer must be located directly under the spindle nut. The nut must be set tight.
Use the fence for all straight line shaping cuts. Be certain it is properly adjusted and securely locked in place.
Use guards, feather boards and hold-down devices whenever possible.
Maintain a 4" margin of safety when using the fence or miter gauge, and a 6" margin of safety when using depth collars. If the part is too small to allow this margin, design and build a special holder or push board.
Cut only new stock that is straight, true and free of splits, checks and knots.
Roll the spindle over by hand to check clearance of complicated settings. Snap the switch on and off quickly to check rotation of the cutter. Be certain the direction of feed is correct.
Have your instructor inspect the set up and review the direction and order of feed you plan to use.
Make a trial cut on an extra piece of stock that is the same thickness as your project.
Always lock or unplug the machine when changing bits or making major adjustments.
SPECIFIC TO HANDHELD ROUTERS:
The bit must be securely mounted in the chuck to a depth of at least 1/2". The base must be tight.
Be certain that the motor is properly grounded.
Be certain that work is properly clamped and will remain stationary during the routing operation.
Place the router base on the work or template, with the bit clear of wood before turning on the power. Hold the router firmly when turning on the motor to overcome starting torque.
Hold the router in both hands and feed it smoothly through the cut in the proper direction.
When the cut is complete, turn off the motor. Do not lift the machine from the work until the motor has stopped.
